Summer is here and outdoor plants are working hard to grow during extreme conditions. That makes this a good time to incorporate soil amendments such as biochar and bokashi into your routine to add essential nutrients back into the soil that growing plants need to grow fully.
Soil amendments allow roots to grow deeper by improving soil aggregation and increasing the porosity of the soil for water and air to circulate. This allows plants to make better use of their resources, tapping into water deeper in the ground and providing more stability for bigger fruit and flowers.
Two of the best products for this are available at The Indoor Earthworm: GreenGro Biochar and The Constant Gardener’s Golden Roots Bokashi. GreenGro Biochar is made in California and Golden Roots Bokashi in Oregon. Both products are certified organic.
Biochar is a type of charcoal created by heating organic matter in the absence of oxygen, pyrolysis. Its highly porous structure with a high surface area that helps improve soil structure through nutrient retention, allowing air and water to be more available to plants. It also helps suppress weeds.
GreenGro’s Earthshine Biochar Blend is a compost starter mimics the rich Terra Preta soils of the Amazon rainforest. It can be used as a top dressing, with soilless media, or mixed into compost tea. Fermented biochar is blended with soybean meal and earthworm castings, Earthshine contains 1.62% water soluble nitrogen, 0.22% Phosphate (P 2 O 2 ), and 0.55% soluble potash (K 2 O). Benefits of Earthshine include:
Added to the soil in December where a plant or tree has been removed or died, Earthshine will work all winter to dissolve root balls so your new plants can take root and Using Earthshine Biochar will save your back and your pocketbook in the long run, because it will bring old dirt back to life instead of removing old dirt and replacing it with new dirt.
Bokashi is a medium of wheat bran mixed with a culture of anaerobic and aerobic, non-chemical, non-toxic (eco-friendly), and non-pathogenic beneficial microorganisms. Bokashi allows composting of all food waste including meat and dairy in small spaces. Developed in Japan and used in Asia, bokashi uses lactobacillus bacteria to predigest waste, eliminating odor and mold growth while you wait to compost.
Golden Roots Bokashi is a natural remediation enhancer that has a multitude of uses both inside and outside your garden. In addition to being a soil and compost activator, it can be made into a tea for plants. Outside the garden it is useful in breaking down waste and deodorizing septic tanks and composting toilets as well as odor control on cat litter boxes and composting of pet waste. Paired with a host of Constant Gardener’s Nectar for the Gods liquid nutrients and soils and Down to Earth fertilizers (also available at The Indoor Earthworm), your plants will be happier and healthier than ever before with less stress and work from you.
Healthy soil means healthy plants. Healthy plants mean a healthy ecosystem, planet, and people.
Soil amendments are not a one size fits all product. The type and proportion of the minerals needed are determined by the type of soil you currently have (sandy, rocky, clay), goals for the site, and soil test results. The Indoor Earthworm has the largest selection of high-quality nutrients of any indoor grow store in the St. Louis region for all of your needs and our knowledgeable staff will help you find the best nutrients for your plants, indoors or out.
